ten years

August 20, 2011

Today, up in Washington, my high school classmates are celebrating our ten year reunion. No, we are not there. I don’t really know why you would plan a reunion for the very end of August when people who are in school or have kids in school have already started the new school year…but whatever.

I don’t think a night of small talk in a hotel reception hall is really Micah’s style anyway.
And although there are a few people I would love to see tonight, for the most part, I have kept in touch with the people I want to keep in touch with from high school. And that is that.
However, I LOVED high school. It was a fun, sweet time of laughter, obnoxious antics, great friendships, and only two suspensions 🙂 We did everything we could to make our small town life adventurous!
Earlier this year, I stumbled across these pictures on facebook. These are of the Class of 2011 during last year’s football season. The special thing about these students is that I was their teacher. Four years ago, right when I moved back to Washington from Texas, I spent a year substitute teaching at my own high school. During the second semester of that year, I took a long-term sub position, teaching these crazy kids HEALTH of all things {aka I taught sex ed to a bunch of 15 year olds!} Now they just graduated and are headed off to college…

But even after TEN years, not too much has changed in good ol’ Lake Stevens. Here we are a decade ago…

And, yes, I’m wearing Micah’s jersey…

Have fun tonight, Class of 2001. Maybe we’ll see you in ten more years.

About Jen Russum

Hi. I’m Jen Russum and this blog is where I’ve been sharing narratives of God’s grace for more than a decade now. Some might say “blogs are dead” but I’m waiting for them to come back around like mom jeans and 90s flannel. I enjoy my coffee iced, my summers hot, and my dinner parties long with lots of laughter. I process all of life’s deepest, darkest, and happiest moments by writing essays in my head. When I have the time, some of these essays get typed up and shared here. I’ve always loved to write, and I hope my words bring you joy and encouragement.
